Fred from Derry, New Hampshire here. I had asked earlier for feeedback about a NX 125 I'm looking at. Thanks for your feedback then. I'm still waiting for the snow to melt here before I can look at it.

I have a new question today for my world-wide fellow fans of the Honda single OHV 4-strokes: Does anybody know if the NX 125 engine, which is limited to an electric start, is interchangeable with other 125 or 100 CFR, XL or SL's (yeah, I know SL 100 or 125 engines are rare these days)?

The NX's electric leg (starter, no kick start) may drive me batty and/or I may want to go bare bones rat dirt bike (think battery eliminator) with it. There is always the bump start method, but that cardiovascular work out gets old.

Thanks!

PS The NX in the pix is just for reference and isn't the one I'm looking at. That one is painted black and needs at least an new *carbie.

Carbie? Just wordy Fred in Derry, NH trying to sound Australian.

Cheers!

Just wanting to say thanks to everyone on this forum helping me to get this bike going again. Finally got it timed good enough to get it running, still needs some fine tuning and the rest of the bike finished. Almost there!!

Ps the knocking is the gas tank that's just sitting up there, doesn't fit well since its from a little Suzuki bike, couldn't use mine as I'm getting ready to paint it. Also need to get the valves adjust so that may be some of the noise

      Hi guys.

Thanks matthew phillips for accepting me.

I have an issue. I have an 1982 xl500r its been stored in my shed for the past 10 years and i hadn't ridden her since. I have changed oil changed the spark plug gave her a new coil. Now i went to kick her over and after a few kicks i heard a snap like sound from the kickstarter. Now it won't spring back up.

Im guessing it is the kickstarter spring has either stretched or the ends have snapped. So at this stage i have the clutch cover off. Clutch basket is off and the cogs behind are off but i cant get the starter spindle out. Need help please

        Xl200 motor

        Was seized at TDC

I managed to free it off and run it will probably require a set of rings to be on the safe side easy job ...

Also put and XR200r cam in will as I was going to keep it ...

So just check I did the cam bolts up properly set the tappets and away you go !!!

Only down side is it has had the infamous weak chain failure and it's taken out the chain guard mount !!

Stator is there and works on the ignition side as I used this to run it ..

        £250 no offers

Also got a xl125s tank unsure which year it's from

Won't be asking much just want them out the way really, I'd also swap for other parts that may be of interest to me

So I got my xl175 engine unstuck. Could only go half a turn though. And Then i snapped off the crank bolt inside the crank....okay take a breath and approach it rationally. Then a drill bit snapped in the hole I was drilling while everything was going so well to use an easy out. Okay. Let's go take a look at my second engine with the broken kick shaft. Good news is it turns freely! I thought for sure that one was seized or junked. Supposedly already had a big bore kit and low compression though. I'm confident that between the two engines I can cobble something together, but looks like I get to split the case to swap the kick shafts...I guess one step forward one step back and then a step to the side?

1979 Honda XL 500s ...i bought this a few years ago and have spent quite a bit on it.

i have changed the front end using a Honda XR450...this now gives me a 21" wheel which means i can now get tyres easily for it and because the forks are longer it has not changed the rake at all, the forks are much fatter and beefier too plus more important i now have a disc brake upfront which makes a big difference ..drum brake was useless. i have also upgraded the electrics from 6 volt to12 volt using a later model alternator and have had a brand new custon wiring loom fitted with all new electrical components ...regulator/rectifier ...new flasher unit which is for led or filament or combo of both plus every bulb has been replaced with LED including all speedo bulbs also has brand new 12 volt battery. i have all the old parts as well and i have a new back wheel with disc brake and and later xl500 sqare box section swing arm and master cylinder if you want to convert rear to disc. plus i have a brand new set of decals...and also have a brand new still in the box...1500LB Motorbike ATV Jack Lift 680 kgs, the bike needs some cosmetic attention but other than that the bike pulls like train, the electrics are now very strong and the headlight which uses a double dipper LED with driver is very bright (easily converted back to standard H4) i have the original front end and i have the original rear light...the exhaust can is a much sought after supertrapp.....check the video

the 12 volt battery is exactly the same size as the original 6 volt and is fitted in the original location. the inside of the tank has a small amount of corrosion but nothing to bad. i had a local man come today to have a look and he seems to have a good knowledge of these bikes and he reckons that a valve stem oilseal needs changing as it smokes on initial startup and it is also running rich as if you rev it hard you get a little blacksmoke which smells of petrol and i would agee with his assessment, there is no mot on the bike but i am confident it would pass.

G'day Fellow XL owners, I have a question to do with the turn signals on the good ol' 6 volt system.

Can I or can I not just simply hook up 6 volt LED turn signals from a moped/scooter amd ave it just work? Or will there be issues? Cheers fellas.

P.s. here is how i have gotten with my bike so far, work makes it hard.

Thanks for letting me join this group!

Where to start, in 1976 my dad purchased a 1976 xl350. In 1979 the head went on it. In 79 he had the bottom end rebuilt, new .25 over size Honda piston rod, and also had cylinder cleaned up. But my farther never got a new head or had it fixed. So from 79 to this past October (2016), he always talked about getting it back up and running or me to get it running. So it sat in my grandmas steel shed since 1979, with the motor sitting outta the bike without the top end on it. Well he passed away in august of 2016. So I knew I needed to get this bike up and running. I found a head from David rhynehart (xlintperformance). Then started from their. About 90% of the engine was still their. So I crated up motor and sent it out to a gent up here in Canada, the top end was shipped to Honda John ayscue. Looking forward to having this bike running in original condition. Just wanted to share my story.

I'm grateful to join this group of XL enthusiasts. It's fun to learn of the wide range of geographical residences of this group's membership (which is a long-winded way to say, "Gee, all of us are from everywhere!"

I am living in Derry New Hampshire. I'm partially sighted (RP) but can still see straight ahead.

I plan to continue to enjoy this site's many posts of motorcycles and follow the progress of your restorations. I also would like to ask you questions about which excels to buy as well as run by some of my build from scratch ideas: either way, I am counting on my new cycle cyber neighbors to keep my plans grounded in reality.

XL100 isn't in the group title... are they like the red headed step Child around here? Lol... XL500 is coming along nicely! Starts first kick no choke, shifts ok.. have to shift past second sometimes.. complete bike missing small stuff like rear pegs, front signals and an end cap on the bars... spoke need to be tightened. That's next weekends project. Also the clutch slips under acceleration. I can start off no problem, but when the RPM's get up is slips. Any suggestions?

                          Greetings from Michigan.

A trip I took a few years ago on a 1981 XL185-S. Rode from the Detroit area to the Makinaw Bridge, crossed it, then toured all over the Upper Penninsula for a few days, putting about 1200 miles behind me.

Miss this little bike. I had more fun on it than any other bike I've ever owned. Bought this bike for $600 with 8600 miles on it and sold it 15 years later with 32,000 miles on it for $900. Neat machine. Easy to maintain. Wished I'd kept it.

The bike built up the frame is knackered it has pin holes and the frame number is very questionable but has a v5

I bought this frame in good faith

Frame on the floor looks ok but needs blast and is not registered I was thinking along the lines of getting it registered or change of frame number on the v5

There is a good loom in a box

And the same for carb rebuild kits?

I have seen the following carb kit, price is fine but it doesn't actually state what is included in the kit... does a 'complete' kit insclude float? Probably not?...

I wanted to convert the system so I bought a trail tech regulator/Rec and hooked it up to pink and yellow per other members here and 13.8 volts! Thank you guys for helping me out! My father and i picked up a project to work on over the winter. 1987 XL250R 22,xx original miles. It's missing some clutch components but they will be ordered soon and arriving within a week. Hoping to have it in good running condition by april. Most everything is there except for about 75$ worth of small parts plus a tune up kit. And a very good cleaning on the carbs. First day the bike was cleaned and degreased and a list of missing and needed parts was made as well as pulling the engine out.
