Im rebuilding the forks on my 83 V65 magna and made the mistake of not taking note which direction the backup ring goes. Does the rounded side go up or down? Also which way does the main spring go it? Narrow pitch towards the top, or bottom?

    • i think rounded side up

    • I have gotten several of both answers.

    • i tried a schematic but it doesnt really show

    • I doubt it's very important in that application, but in general, the sharp side goes away from the direction the greatest force is coming from. That way, the sharp edge "bites" to better resist being forced out of the groove. So in this case, the ring would go in sharp side up.

    • I just checked the manual, and it says "Install the snap ring with its radiused edge facing down and install the dust cover. So I was right about direction, but wrong in thinking it probably didn't matter.

As for the springs, it says, "...the narrow pitches should face toward the top."

    • The snap ring and the backup ring are two different things.

    • D'oh! Sorry, I'm gonna have to work on my reading comprehension! :D According to the manual illustration, the backup ring has the cupped part facing upward, toward the seal, flat part toward the bushing.

So if this is the seal>> II ] <<this is the backup ring
