After elleventy seven days of rain I finally got out for a 112.7 mile ride . 112 miles were on bare dry pavement and .7 miles was on road construction where they sprayed liquid mud on the pavement. Now that I have the bike cleaned I'm looking forward to a few more rides before the snow arrives.

  • You'll know Brad Heppell if its the old style reg as it has a flat surface, the finned ones have a rippled surface. If yours is flat old one n you haven't had problems yet, preempt it n just get out swapped out out for a finned one anyway, you can normally pick them up reasonably priced. I wouldn't wait until fate decides that, cos notorious for taking out the battery if fry it, even brand new ones I've heard guys swap batteries thinking its that n it fooks the new battery too. It sounds a lot worse but it's a mega pain n highly inconvenient when it goes but its a simple job to do I'm sure I posted the instructions in files on appreciation page..

  • Check and clean the terminal connection on starter , I thought my battery was stuffed but turned out it was a shitty connection. Good luck

  • Cheers Tracy will definatly have a look into it.

Right guys hope this ain't anything serious just pulled up from work on my bike jumped of pushed it to the garage and noticed a slight knocking noise :( ??? Oil is fine as it's not long had its 500 mile service no knocks of bangs on the way home from work ?also doesn't make the noise when rolling it backwards into my garage help help help better not be serious

%d comments
  • so it was knocking when pushed forwards (but not backwards) with the engine off and in neutral? Could be loose chain - I've had one go so slack it was clunking on the engine case.

  • Took it to lings earlier turns out it was what Gavin Davies said just a slightly slackened chain and also the chain was a little dry so all that panicking for nothing

  • well done for hearing it though, your ears will help you find a lot of things. When the too-weak stock 420p chain finally gives up, upgrade to 428 pitch. I can help point you towards the right parts. 420p chains tend to last about 3-4,000 miles (I've had 3), my one 428p x-ring chain has thus far lasted about 13,000! :D

What are the usual reasons for poor fuel economy with a postie? Mine is stock and I only got 135kms out of the last tank (including the reserve). Thats about 4L /100km. I thought the CT110 was meant to run between 1 - 2L / 100?

I found an old picture of me on my 1970 Honda CB 350 at the Atsugi, Japan Naval Air Station Motorcycle Drags on June 20, 1971. I thought the fastest way down the runway was to rev the engine to the 10,500 rpm red line and pop the clutch. I did recover from this somehow and I got my front wheel back on the ground without dumping the bike.

I don't plan on trying this with my 2004 Aero 750.

So here's my 85. just picked it up a week or two ago. original owner said it probably has like 30 or 40 hours on it. Sat in a barn most of it's life until 2 years ago, barn started falling apart and a co worker had been begging him to buy it so he sold it to him. he changed out the calipers and fork protectors i think.. and he decides to sell it for some reason.. anyway it's mine now, and I am having fun on it.

Had a Honda 350 back in 80's built it from 2 cycles, 3 engine and 20 old rims. Worked on it before I rode it. Was bored 30 thousands over. Would do 90 mph.

High compression J E pistons are waiting to be fitted to my VTR1000F track bike — Honda VTR 1000 Firestorm owners

High compression J&E pistons are waiting to be fitted to my VTR1000F track bike. Has anyone removed and fitted pistons before, any tips?

%d comments
  • Thanks Nigel, that advice is very much needed too! Have you removed pistons from the VTR before, what is involved?

  • No I have never done pistons on a bike, but I'm an ex car motor mechanic by trade. I'm actually in the process of buying J&E pistons for my race car engine I'm currently building up and have been highly recommended them for their forged pistons. I personally would always fit a piston from the top side down, with conrod already fitted. If the conrod has the two bolts already installed, then cover bolts with some tape over the length of them, so that they don't either score the bore, or mark/ hit the crank journal as the piston is being tapped down the bore. Apply clean oil to rings prior to using ring compressor and wipe abit around the bore before installing. When tapping down piston to the point where rings are entering bore, any sudden loss of movement should be a big warning sign that one of the rings may have not entered bore properly. If in doubt, pull back out and re check ring alignment and start process again.

  • Have a search on installing oversize pistons on www.vtr1000.org and/or superhawkforum.com

  • Thanks highly appreciate the advise. great idea.

  • One thought I have been having though.... As we know, the headlight is fed by the regulator/rectifier. This is noticeable at idle as the light level drops and flickers. I should hope it is an irregular DC voltage rather than a bit of AC slipping through. If so, it will possibly strobe on idle if the CREE is fed from the same source. How cool would that be? I'll find out soon.

  • I installed a 12v LED tail light bulb On my 1980 Ct110 and it flickers like a strobe at low idle. once i give it some throttle it is a steady light with no strobe. works great tho.
