• Retro Old School Thought I might frighten some Northern Hemisphere Shadow... — Honda Shadow Aero

"Retro Old School"! Thought I might frighten some Northern Hemisphere Shadow owners with too much sunlight reflecting off my knees on a stunning summer's ride. The helmet was custom made by Davida in the UK to match the Aero's colours, not legal in all countries or states. Forget the 'leathers', my Bavarian wife is complaining that the socks don't match my Lederhosen but they are real comfortable on a hot day. Farmers were seen passing out as I rode by!

Note I have been bad influence on my mate's Shadow, he now has the leather seat treatment to match his bike, just NZ$250 to customize.

I am normally picky about safety gear but on a day like today, shorts it is! I actually do have Dainese body armour on under the T shirt as well as under the Lederhosen!

Habe ein gute Fahrt! (And a good laugh!)

Anyone know how to change the orange 'lights' in my 2005 Aero Speedo? Have had the Speedo off the bike and its a sealed unit. The chrome outer ring is clamped onto the plastic body of the speedo and no sockets or removable globes accessible! Any ideas people?

    • You have to use a very big sledgehammer ! hihihihi

    • Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but this speedo modification link might show you what you need to take it apart: http://www.shadowaero750.com/f iles/speedo.pdf

    • Maybe shift lever

    • I heard the trx350 head works on the 350x, but cams are different.

    • I know many xr cams have more lift than their three wheeler counter parts.

In the 80's through 2000s Honda used different techniques for different machines. Mainly, dirtbikes had more power output on the XRs and CRs, the XLs were dumbed down a little for roads. In terms of ATV's, like the 400ex...compared to the xr400...the cam has a different profile on the xr400, making more power. Should be the other way around, since the quads are heavy...but i guess if you wanna have the best bikes, they gotta have power.

Anyone cut the baffle out of a 1100? Performance problems?

    • I did.. actually felt a performance increase.

    • I did it last summer....IT sounds faster....LOLOLOL

    • It's not hard by any stretch just take your time drilling holes around the outside of baffle then chisel it out without distorting the pipe.. so in other words dont beat the hell out of it when you want to as it's tough steel in places and a tight place to work with tools.

    • I used a hole saw for metal to cut mine out. Then just grabbed it with pliers and pulled them out....

    • It's pretty easy, buy the mounts and peg adaptor from dratv.com. You've just gotta grind a bit out of the frame tube above the front engine mounts. I've just fitted them in an 09 and a 10 mdl.

    • How much better do they get up and boogie? What's the to speed with such a mod?

    • Gear it up and it'll go as quick as you like. With 16-45 gearing mine will do 110 but it's a bit hectic at that speed. But they are a very snappy little donk. I'll post some pics later.

    • si yo la llevo al mecanico jejeje

    • 21 mm wrench on one end, 23?mm on the other.

    • just remove the downtube cover, unscrew the top of the carby, remove the cable from the carby slide and disconnect from throttle end and remove.

    • how do i remove from the throttle twist grip?

    • have you opened up the chrome switch cover thingy? plus you can also pull the rubber grip off which might help a little.

anyone here changed a clutch? I just had a go and couldn't get the clutch basket off (I have the special tool)

    How did you do it?

    Cheers

    • Impact drill. I made my own special tool from a socket. But wouldn't have been able to get it off without an impact drill.

    • Stick a copper coin (like an American penny if u have one) in the gears behind the basket to stop the whole thing spinning. I used a thin rectangle of aluminium instead of a coin. It just has to be softer metal than the steel gears. Have you folded back the tabs of the lock washer behind the 'special' nut?

    • I did fold back the tabs, and tried hard. I stuck something in there but it was a tough shot. I found an old 2c piece I might give that a go. Otherwise I'll see if the bro in law has an impact drill...

    • Glenn, it would seem you've triggered some not-so-automatic advertising in a newer post on the page. :P

    • If the coin doesn't work you might be able to hold the basket with an oil filter wrench. If it is crazy tight get a breaker bar or long hollow piece of steel. Leverage works!

Dave has laways done the paint jobs himself, but this guy can oven bake them where we caint..PC is great, don't get me wrong, hard wearing,no doubt, but lose the sheen and go very matt looking after a while. Few problems when needing redoing etc so the guy is gonna repaint and bake in oven for us all 4 wheels/swingarms/forks and then both bikes will look even better than they do now! :-) Anyone wanting the guys contact info for respray, drop me a note as he was excellent and lots of coats of paint and loads od coats of lacquer and oven baked. :-) Here are daves before and after bike pics

    • Tight trails, at first I kept looking at some spots thinking man that'd slide beautifully around right there, then you come around and TREE! lol. Nice video, R sounds real nice.

    • When these trails were cut we wanted to preserve the nature as much as possible. Mainly used for cutting wood / hauling. I rarely ride in there with the sport trikes. They are mostly all wide enough to get my 79 jimmy through with the plow. ( 10 foot plow ) , the bike plow is 4 feet wide, so the R is always riding on the banks, since it is 54", makes it a pain.

    • Glad you preserved as much as you could while still being able to enjoy it the way we do.. Wish more people took to such thought, perhaps our sport would be more widely accepted.

    • I found Dan's post on the hondarebelforum. Looks like a few guys are trying hard to help him get his bike going again.

    • I had the issues .. I the idle need be adjust higher and the smoke maybe because it too cold u need warm up little bit alonger.. Try adjust the idle higher and leave it run for five minutes and switch out of choke.. U might need clean the carb soon too.

    • Found out today that the left cylinder has 0 compression so only one cylinder is working. How hard and expensive to fix this myself?
