progress update: Pulled and gapped the other plugs in the engine. They were all clean and gauged correctly. Check 1 and 4 for sparks: We have spark!

Inspected under the seat: noticed a wire coming from the fuel tank to the positive battery lead was disconnected. Reconnected.

No coolant was in reservoir, clean looking oil in sight glass.

Noticed a small rubber tube wasn't connected to anything. At the bottom of the fuel switch(is that the petcock?) I found a lead at the bottom of the carb that looks like it could be attached to it.

Tried starting until the battery died. Nothing. taking the battery out, a cylindrical part was kinda dangling behind it, wrapped in duct tape?(last pic)

Anyways....here's some pics:

  • The tube on the left on the petcock is just left open as a vent on mine.

  • The left hose is a diaphragm vent and remains open.

    • I think using higher octane gas gives me a little extra umph.

I have heard that using ethanol free gas helps considerably, although I can't buy it around here.

Change your riding. Remember that the engine is at peak power output near 7000 rpm so at 65/70/75 it may be better to use 4th instead of 5th.

Changing out the gearing can help. I hit a wall around 70-75 where I can't go faster in 4th and shifting into 5th doesn't increase speed because engine rps drop down to 3000 or so. On the rare occasion where I get past that hump on a down hill and get my speed up to 85 the rebel doesn't have any problem keeping it there because in 5th gear I am in that 7000 rpm sweet spot. Adjusting the gearing would change that so you shift into the next gear at a different speed helping to get over the hump by lowering it from 75 to 65 or so.

    • Also check regular maintenance on spark plugs, oil change, air filter chain lube and tension and tires... new tires seemed to add me a few mph to my top speed.

    • Theoretically windshield and adjusting the suspension should impact it too...

Good service counts — Honda CBF1000 Owners Forum

    Good service counts.

Went into a local dealer here in Christchurch a few weeks ago to ask about an FJR to replace the biffer. Stood in the shop for ages while the guy was on the phone. He eventually finished the call, then made another one without even looking up to say good morning. I eventually got fed up of waiting and walked out. On my way home last week I spotted a Triumph Tiger outside the same dealer so stopped to ask about it. Different guy, but he had absolutely no interest in telling me about the bike or indeed trying to sell it to me. No I couldn't have a test ride, but I should come back tomorrow if I was really interested. The next morning I went over to Three Cross Motorcycles, PX'd the Biffer and paid full price for a 2010 Tiger 1050. Sales guy was friendly and helpful without being pushy and I got a deal I was really happy with. I've had five bikes over 900cc in the last six years, so now Three Cross have a happy customer who will be going back very soon, and the Christchurch dealer has a pissed off bloke who sat down and wrote this.

PS, say's on their web page that they don't provide an email address because '' genuine buyers prefer to speak to them in person''.

    • I traded my CBF for a T100 last year, The first dealer totaly ignored my email, the second gave me a test ride then told me they had no stock for 6 months and offered an insulting amount on the part ex. I got a recomendation for Haslemere Motorcycles, great service and sensible part ex on a 6 month old bike with 500 miles on it. Have also joined HTOC https://www.facebook.com/groups/595786427208666/ Great banter, advice and they organise rides etc for Hinckley owners.

    • You should publish (name and shame) the dealer whoh gave you a bad service.

    Looking for some advice....

Only wiring mods Ive done to my postie is new indicators (disconnected old ones and put smaller halogen lamp - bullet style ones in their place).

Now indicators wont work and neither will horn.... Back indicators hold on solid (wont flash) and fronts do nothing at all.

I have placed 12v indicators in, am I under a false illusion that it is a 12v system (2001 model) or is there something else wrong?

    Cheers!

Has anybody noticed that their Electric shift ranchers will shift better after... — Honda Rancher Forum

Has anybody noticed that their Electric shift ranchers will shift better after it's warmed up for a few minutes?

As I posted on here before, I had some shifting issues that was driving me crazy. I finally charged up the battery, I noticed that it shifted it a whole lot better. Every time I started up, and then leave it off the charger, the next day it would be down almost 20% in charge. I bought a brand-new NAPA Legend AGM battery, and after leaving it off the charger for a couple days, it was at 97%.

It's shifting way better...the only thing I notice is that after it starts up, it doesn't wanna shift from 2nd to 3rd. Everything else is fine up-and-down. But once it's warmed up for a few minutes, it doesn't seem to be a problem shifting from 2nd to third. I would expect it to shift better once it warms up, but why only that gear, and why just when I'm shifting up, instead of sitting down as well?

    Pic for attention:

So, I bought my Rebel from really nice folks who swear (don't they all) that "all routine maintenance was done". Which, considering there's less than 2K miles on it, amounts to basically bupkiss. It does have a new battery. I'm changing the oil this week. Do I need to replace the tires too? What else should I do to make sure she's as close to brand new as possible? Thanks!

    %d comments
    • I will second the comment regarding chain lube. If it has been sitting for a decade then making sure the chain gets a nice coating of lube could prevent problems. While you are at it you might want to check the chain tension. The manual describes the process.

    • I am ordering the service manual.

    • That stuff is in the owners manual, which is on the bike. Left hand side just lower than the seat there is a panel that covers the air filter and it is velcroed in there. Also of you didn't know there is a mini tool kit down near the rear suspension the tool compartment unlocks with the bikes key.
