  • so what was the problem?

  • We had no DC voltage going to the rear coil. At first we thought the converter unit was causing the problem but decided to start right at the beginning of the ignition system and check the ohms reading from the pulse gen then the continuity of all wires running up to the coil and converter, all good so moved onto the ICU and all good there, plugged it back in Joab hit the button and bang we had voltage! We’re putting it down to a dry joint (connection) with the ICU plug that caused the problem. Like all electrical problems on bike it’s always a pain tracing the fault but when you do it’s usually a quick fix and you’re up and running again.

  • It didnt skip a beat when it went out last night and I can safely say that it got a good clean out of all the cobwebs from being sat for a couple of months lol I know this cause joab lead us home lol

I've been riding Pauline's 'Storm for the last few days - and I've noticed a misfire/splutter around 3,500-4,000 RPM, usually after using more throttle/revs, backing off, then rolling on the throttle. It clears its throat with more Revs and throttle - and is fine at high revs or large throttle openings.

The bike had manual CCTs about a 1000 miles ago - and had to have the head off as the mechanic had the chain jump some teeth and bend valves (he is a qualified mechanic honest!)

It's had new plugs (iridium), at that 1,000 mile point, a very recent new battery and reg/rec. the bike has a K&N - but when I looked at the old plugs they weren't obviously weak.

Soooo - any thoughts? Anything obvious/known failure points that I need to check? (Do coils fail, any diaphragms fail?)

I can ride through it, but its Pauline's bike - and I need it to run right and be smooth for her to gain experience safely....

Cheers guys!

  • Clive: check choke cables as well especially when carbs have been removed it's possible one of them is lined up wrong and open's the choke a bit. This can cause misfire as well.

  • Cheers rob, will do. Putting OEM plugs in at weekend too.

  • Really curious what causes the problem, allways interesting to learn about things, hope you will be on the road again quickly.

Anyway I tested it tonight and pretty happy with the result.

I'll post some more pics of the bike kitted out in the next couple of days.

I bought an old seat with a slight tear in it for £15 to be shipped direct to the upholsterer itro £5 postage to www.elsemade.com to get re-foamed in double or triple (Had a gel seat in past and left it on old VTR when sold..as was gonna buy a Blade..long story) gonna try foam, prob black seat with maybe basket weave effect as previous one, red piping and red VTR logo on back of rider seat ( to be finalised) and the guys can get a little 'lift' at front for 'protection' against the tank.lol... So, when done, and back, and one bike, as getting both bikes done, will upload photos.. Apparently Martin Veck had his done and the guy comes highly recommended although, get in the queue as he's got around a 3 week lead time atm. :-) You can pretty much design your own seat..

  • You can get a pod filter & jet combo from www.ontenmotorcycles.com.au or just the jet from www.motorcyclespareswarehouse.com.au and the pod filter from Uni Filter. There are also heaps of very cheap pod filters on eBay. I'm considering going back to the stock air box though as I think I've derestricted it too much. Goes fine at 1/2 to full throttle, but misbehaves from idle to 1/4 throttle.

Hi John Hinsby, this should help, but it is down th personal choice, we have never had any problems with ours and have done at least 4 of our bikes and some mates VTRs too. up to you, hope you finds it helpful..

Basically you have to take the cam chain tensioner off, then the head off the tensioner itself, drop in a piece of metal typically around 6mm long and put the head back on. If the spring then does collapse or break at any point in the future, it stops the worm screw inside the tensioner collapsing back so far so the cam chain cannot skip the teeth on the cams and it keeps the chain under tension.. So basically you make the piece metal to fit, usually around 6mm.

Much cheaper and better as you cannot see it and would never know it was there! The manuals are ugly, and you can see them but most guys aren't bothered, I have had this stopper mod done now on 4 of our VTRs and I rode my old one for 3 years and sold it on with the stopper mod in place for 3 years and never had another problem with it.. It is best to do it when tank is almost empty for obvious reasons! Works like a dream... Much cheaper option if money is an issue or you simply don't see the point in spending roughly £? when a £2 piece (if that) of metal will do it and it works!

The diagram should help explain it as it is the one off the forum.

I have a question about windshields Friends I started riding with recently... — Honda Shadow Aero

I have a question about windshields. Friends I started riding with recently talked me into getting a windshield (especially for our longer trips) which I received and installed last night. Today I rode with it and I think it needs adjusted, but not sure which way. I wear a helmet when I ride and at highway speeds the air hits my helmet in such a way it vibrates. Not comfortable having your helmet and teeth rattling. I know it has to do with the windshield as it hasn't happened before. Just not sure if I should raise it or lower it to help with that wind vibration on my helmet. Has anyone else experienced this?

  • Okay, last windshield question. After riding 50 miles and a few hours trying to raise and lower it just to see, I realize it needs to be about 2 inches shorter than it is. Has anyone here cut one down? My shield is from National Cycle and it is 4.5 mm thick. I looked online and see some use band saws and others use drimmel tools. Should I tape and cut it while on the bike to prevent scratches? I'm all ears and running low on patience. :( Wish I would have been able to try out the size before buying it. It's one thing to level it while parked in driveway and another when riding with bumps and sunshine streaming in. Cindy Cox, that is a sharp bike.

  • You need a DOT approved left or right handed wind shifter, depending on which way the wind is blowing and the amount of freeboard exposed while maneuvering a hairpin turn.

  • I think the aero 750 forum on Delphi had a tutorial posted on how to cut down a shield. It's been a long time since I have logged in there though.
