I have a Harley 1200 and my friend says I should change the oil, what is best, as all my friends run expensive HD oil but their bikes break down and are off the road if they do high mileage should I change from HD oil as a friend says HD sell it to make the bikes wear more?I have had 2 broken gearboxes in 8 years,

    • Maybe Harley groups are more concerned about bling, acting cool and leather jackets. Therefore he came to the right place to ask such question.

    • Keep the oil, get rid of the Harley.

I wouldnt have been so polite!!!

    • After watching this...the jag driver is an arse....but the scooter riders road position was appalling, I don't know why he moved into the right hand lane? I am sure that a lifesaver would have have helped to or at least checking your mirrors

    • I dont agree. It was a single lane exit with hatchings down the lhs. He had every right to hold his line . He turned right at the roundabout. The only time he was out of position was when he was between lanes entering the roundabout.

    • I think the bike should have more than 3cc

    • The young lad was inexperienced & the Jag driver was used to get everything his own way & bit of a bully. IMHO. What is wrong with being polite, understanding & giving someone the benefit of the doubt sometimes. Most road users are OK, as the roads would not function at all, especially if you believe all the rubbish about cagers on some bikers sites.

Doing some trouble shooting and wondering if anyone can help — Honda VTR 1000 Firestorm owners

Doing some trouble shooting and wondering if anyone can help,

I want to know if both slides bounce up and down whilst running or if just the intake one does?

seems the bike wont rev past 2-3k, had it going by pulling the float bowls and cleaning jets but as soon as it's together it does it again, revs fine with airbox off but it's pushing fuel out of the jet/air passages on the top and up the trumpet on high revs, narrowed it down to blocked jets and I've put an inline filter in too but they keep blocking up.

All the symptoms point to jets but why do they keep blocking? Will I have to strip the carbs completely bowls/slides etc and clean?

Also the slides moving thing? Is just the intake one moving normal?

Makes the right noise and falls at the right rate, suction noise etc, just doesn't move when running. Never worked with twins before lol

    • Did you check the slider diaphragm by any chance? Both sliders should be moving up and down.

    • Sorted, timing had jumped a tooth, it's back in line now and runs mint!

    • If timing jumped a tooth then possible tensioners aren't doing their job?

    • Been there done that, most honda shadows, magnas, cbx, sabre, aero are all that way, good idea to put dieelectric grease into the rubber connector covers, these connections get cruddy and rusty easy there.

    • All the connectors for the tail light and turn signal wiring are under the seat. Pull that and check to make sure the bullet connectors are not loose or corroded. They are kind of in a prone position and can come loose due to vibration and moisture.

    • Thank you all gentlemen! The problem is solved!

    • As I give pointers I do this for a living I am a tech for 18 years I do my best to give facts idle is reflect tion of pilot jet and fuel mixture screw of idle to 3/4 throttle is jet needle adjustment 3/4 to full throttle is main jet ajustment

    • If you went from 138 main jet to a 148 jet and it started easyer you need to raise your jet needle witch means you will lower the clip on it and make shore spacers and or washers stay in the same spot only move cclip down witch will raise the needle do one needle groove at a time. I gave you my number if you needed help only because I sigjested this carb and I got a new one for mine too because my bike is still apart I don't have adjustment numbers but soon I will till then I can work you through it but four of use can't make changes you have my number hood luck

    • OK man thanks. I do appreciate it.

    • It does commuting, touring and aggressive riding good. Not superb in either, but good.

    • Torque.

    • It was rock steady today riding at speed in some very strong crosswinds. It brakes well, has a nice band of torque, great for powering out of corners. I don't get headaches or hissing in my ears with this bike either, which is a bonus:-) The only downside is some vibration at low speeds. I can't believe how well it corners though & doesn't feel like a big bike. All in all very impressed having nearly completed my 1st 1k miles.

I wouldnt mind some opinions to help me decide what to do with my fixer upper bike. All being well will paint it up this week then will finish it off asap to sell. At mo trying to decide on colours. Already decided putting bike back to original which is black but was going to put a twin stripe in white down the middle to make it a tad different plus the stripe would go with the white wheels. Prob I have is the seat is trimmed in red (photo) and I dont think thats gona go with the white. Next thought is darkish red stripes but that still wont go with the wheels. Maybe change wheel colour? Under the dust is quite a clean bike so trying to make it look nice so can sell for as much as poss. Any thoughts?
